Abbaye Des Rocs is considered the first modern microbrewery and the pioneer of the craft beer movement in Belgium. It was founded in 1979, and due to the low availability of professional small-scale brewing equipment, their first brewery was handcrafted with recovered machinery such as old washing machines. Their first beers La Montagnarde and L’abbaye des Rocs brune didn´t go commercial until 1984. In 2011, they acquired a 12th century watermill that originally belonged to the abbey, and in 2017 they expanded they actual facilities in order to cope with the increasing demand.
